POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision is responsible for assisting patients with insurance options,
setting up payment arrangements, collecting insurance co-payments and deposits;
comprehensive information is obtained to protect the patients well-being and the financial
interest of the institution.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

After physician completes medical screening:

  • Conducts financial screening of emergency room patients.
  • Collects deposits and co-pays when applicable.
  • Enters relevant information into computer system.
  • Sets up appointments with the onsite Medi-Cal eligibility worker.
  • Sets up payment arrangements with self pay patients.
  • Assists patients with questions concerning their insurance coverage.
  • Advises self pay patients of their medical and dental care options available in the
    community for further follow-up care.

OTHER DUTUES:

  • Performs patient registration when Registration Clerks require assistance.
  • Participates in data gathering for financial reporting.
  • Cross-train to cover Inpatient Financial Counselor
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned by the Manager, Business Services
    or Admitting Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

License/Certification: N/A

Education: High school graduate or equivalent

Experience: Experience in hospital registration, billing and collections,
financial counseling

Skills:

  • Spanish speaking required.
  • Professional demeanor and excellent public relations skills.
  • Knowledge of medical insurances (Medicare, Medi-Cal,
    HMO’s, PPO’s, commercial), EMTALA regulations,
    hospital billing and collection process.
  • Must have excellent customer service and communication
    skills with the ability to effectively calm patients and be
    able to deal with distressed and / or agitated patients.
  • Must have excellent written skills with knowledge of
    medical terminology.
  • Typing speed: minimum 40 wpm, computer knowledge
  • Knowledge of CPT / ICD-9 coding helpful.
  • Employee must demonstrate basic computer skills
