POSITION SUMMARY
Under direct supervision of the Section Leader, the clinical Laboratory Scientist performs clinical
laboratory testing and assists in promoting a quality of service based on accuracy and timeliness in
reporting results. Under general supervision the Clinical Laboratory Scientists are responsible for
assisting the department manager in the effective operation of the laboratory through the coordination
of all activities in their respective responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Follows established procedures to perform routine and STAT clinical laboratory testing.
Follows established quality control procedures for all tests including initiation of remedial action in outof-control situations.
Keeps abreast of reference and critical values for neonates, infants, pediatric, adolescent, adult and
geriatric patients so that the appropriate physician notification takes place in the event of the recovery
of critical values related to specific age groups.
Performs all Laboratory Information system (LIS) functions necessary to complete patient testing and
specimen processing.
Participates in continuing education programs and consults current technical literature to keep abreast
of changes in the field.
Promotes good public relations through productive and professional interaction with patients,
physicians, and other hospital staff.
Assist in maintaining reagents and supplies inventories.
Maintains a clean and organized work area.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Section Leader, Laboratory Supervisor, and the
Manager, Laboratory.
Participates in proficiency testing events when requested to do so by the Section Leader.
Other Duties
Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Section Leader and the Manager, Laboratory.
Demonstrates proficiency in performing arterial punctures, venipunctures, and capillary collection
techniques.
Senior Clinical Laboratory Scientist and PM Senior Clinical Laboratory Scientist
Performs all routine maintenance procedures and calibration of clinical analyzers throughout the
laboratory.
Performs and documents quality control according to clinical area guidelines and takes remedial action
when necessary. Documents and alerts Section Leader to unresolved problems.
Participates in the continuing Quality Improvement (CQI) process in the clinical laboratory and
throughout the hospital if called on to do so.
Participates in maintaining regulatory compliance with California State Department of Health and
JCAHO
Participates in researching and developing new procedures.
Performs all preventative maintenance and quality control to prepare the laboratory for morning run
Senior Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Night Shift
Assumes primary responsibility for morning phlebotomy rounds for CCU. Covers ER calls and
coordinates testing coverage for those calls between the hours of 0500 and 0700.
Provides back-up support for Phlebotomist, including monitoring HIS/LIS interface for problems
Senior Clinical Laboratory Scientist – Section Lead
Performs all duties of a Senior Medical Technologist
Assesses and assigns section workload to achieve maximum efficiency.
Ensures the validity and accuracy of test results and maintains adequate Quality Control Measures for
the section.
Directs and evaluates orientation of new employees and takes action to correct deficiencies.
Works closely with laboratory administration to assure compliance with all regulatory agencies
QUALIFICATIONS
*License/Certification
Current California State Clinical Laboratory Scientist License, required.
*Proof of all required License(s) and Certification(s) due at time of hire.
**Education
Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology or related science.
**Proof of all required educational levels due at time of hire.
Experience
Clinical Laboratory Scientist must have participated in a one-year internship program.
PM Clinical Laboratory Scientist must have minimum three years experience
Performs all preventative maintenance and quality control to prepare the laboratory for morning run
Senior and Section Clinical Laboratory Scientist must have a minimum of two to three years experience
as a Laboratory Scientist
